The younger brother of Jamie Redfern,
Derek joined Brian and the Juniors
for its last year on air in 1969, and sang a number of duets with his big
brother.
In the early 1970s he found a little bit of fame in
Melbourne as the voice of
the animated Herald newspaper delivery boy in a series of commercials,
singing I'm Your Happy Herald Boy.
Derek and his sister Linda appeared as guests on
Young Talent Time
in September 1972 and sang a duet.
Derek impressed the producers and after a number of auditions Derek
joined The Young Talent Team on the first episode of Young Talent Time
in 1973 - exactly one year after his brother had made his final appearance.
He became a bit of a teen idol and, in 1974,
Festival Records released the record
"Put Your Head On My Shoulder".
Featuring Puppy Love on the B Side, the single charted well in Adelaide
and reached #5 in Tasmania.
He remained part of The Young Talent Team for 4 years
and has fond memories
of his time with the show.

Derek continued to perform after leaving Young Talent Time,
sometimes as a solo act, sometimes as a duo with his brother Jamie Redfern,
and, for a while, as part of the rock group Vortex.
However, Derek did not continue his career in show business.
He is currently working as a handyman for a suburban council.
